MY JOURNEY IN ACHIEVING ‘ZERO HUNGER’ IN MY NEIGHBOURHOOD

The Covid-19 pandemic will be remembered as a huge calamity by many people. It is because since the beginning of the pandemic, there are numbers of tragedy occurred. For example, some people lost their loved ones while some other people lost their source of income. As a normal human being, I together with my neighbors also had been affected with this pandemic. We received death news every day but the most critical problem we must face is starvation. This situation happened when family leaders lost their source of income, and they are not able to buy food for their family members. By implementing Zero Hunger goal mentioned in Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and Hifz al-Nafs principle mentioned in Maqasid Shariah, we figured out a solution.

In my neighborhood, mosque is a center where all community members will gather and discuss every issue in the community. Therefore, our head of community conducted a meeting with all community members to look for solution regarding the starvation issue. After several meetings, we finally achieve the solution which is we are going to build a food bank called as Gerobok Rezeki. This food bank will work as a platform where the capable can donate food supply while the needy can take food supply as much as they need. This kind of system encourages people to help each other instead of depending too much on government. We also asked for food supply donation from individuals and agencies outside from our community as an extra support.

It took almost two days to build our Gerobok Rezeki. The food bank was built behind the mosque so it can easily be accessible by the people. Once the food bank built completely, we make an announcement through various platforms of social media so everyone will notice its existence. I was one of the members who monitored the food bank as a precaution if there is any problem happens. Alhamdulillah, everything is working out smoothly as what we expected. This food bank really helps those who are needy, and they are very happy as they still having food supply to continue their life. I personally think we should investigate some of the food bank visitors as they seem capable enough to receive the food supply.

Until now, the food bank still serving the community. From this program, I have learned many things and one of them is we should not judge anyone or anything at the first sight. For example, I used to think that those who rushed to get the food supply are greedy people, but my perception is wrong because the rush doesn’t mean greedy, but it shows how parents are really care about their children hunger. The Covid-19 pandemic taught me the value of having source of income as it is important to keep surviving in life. The responsibility to monitor the food bank taught me to improve the way I interact with others. As a conclusion, helping others will make your life getting happier and better.
